Photo Cropping Guide for Printing Your Images: Wedding Wednesday

You get all of your images back from your wedding and you are excited to get them printed and hung up in your home. However, when you go to print some of your images, they require cropping. Why does this happen and what can you do?

Prints come in many sizes, although all images are created by the camera at a 2:3 ratio. Depending on the size of the print you are choosing, part of the image may be cropped. The visuals below show what a photo would look like at different sizes.

What can you do if you don't want to crop an image for printing? You can print it in an aspect ratio that is close to the size you are wanting or you can mat a smaller image to fit in a larger frame. An example of choosing a different aspect ratio would be if you wanted to purchase an 8x10 print. Instead of an 8x10 print, choose an 8x12 print. This will print the image without cropping and you will barely notice the different in size. If you worry about finding a frame, you can find tons to frames in all aspect ratios online and at craft stores. If you choose to mat your images, an example with the same 8x10 size would be to print an 8x10 print and then mat it into an 11x14 frame. Your image will still be cropped if you do it this way, but a lot of times when you mat your print, it won't be as easily noticed.

If you have any questions on cropping your images for print, just talk to your photographer, they will be able to help you understand what option would be best for you.
