There are so many different wedding traditions and events that normally occur on a wedding day. You shouldn't feel pressured into these traditions and should make your wedding exactly how you want to. Below are a few wedding traditions that you can break!
Not Seeing Each Other
This is the one tradition that I always recommend breaking. Seeing each other before the ceremony will free up time for you to get straight to the reception and to the party! It also helps the wedding day flow more smoothly. Seeing each other before the ceremony is not bad luck! Having a First Look is so intimate and special and is one of the only times that you will be able to be alone and away from the hustle and bustle of your wedding.
Reception Events
For the most part, all weddings have the same set of reception events. First dance, Father/Daughter Mother/Son dance, cake cutting, and bouquet/garter toss. You do not need to do all of these events. You can do some and not others or you can come up with own reception events. I've had couples have cupcakes and pies instead of cakes, have a football toss instead of the bouquet/garter toss, and have had a line dancing lesson during the open dancing along with much more.
Saturday Weddings
Now, don't get me wrong, I see the appeal for Saturday weddings and they do make sense for most people. You and your guests won't have to take off work and will have the next day to rest and recover. However, Saturday's book up fast! If you are planning a fall wedding and want a barn venue, if you don't book your venue at least a year out then you will more than likely be out of luck. Choosing a Sunday, Friday, or any other weekday wedding may let you have your dream wedding at your ideal time.
Wearing White
We all know that the bride wears white and that guests should never, ever, under any circumstances, wear white. However, this doesn't have to be the case! Maybe you have your eyes on a blush gown. Or maybe you want to be unique or have an off beat wedding and decide to wear a black or super colorful frock. Let. you imagination run wild. Don't feel like you MUST wear a white gown!
Bouquets
I do love the gorgeous, lush, fragrant bridal bouquets and love the look that they give the wedding portraits, however, you shouldn't feel like you need to have a bouquet. If holding flowers doesn't seem like your thing or something that you want your bridesmaids to do, then don't! There are plenty of alternatives that you can do or maybe you just want to not hold anything. That is completely fine! Don't be afraid to break this tradition.
The best weddings are the ones that truly represent the couple. If you have been dreaming of a traditional wedding then have one! If traditional weddings aren't your thing, then don't be afraid to think outside of the box and make your wedding truly your own!
