Weddings are full of joy, but let's be honest, they can also bring up complicated family situations. Whether it's divorced parents who don't speak, a sibling you're estranged from, or a family friend who suddenly wants to be in every photo, the dynamics can get tricky.
As your photographer, I'm not just looking through a lens, I'm observing people, reading the room, and doing my best to protect your peace. That's why I do care about your family dynamics.
Here's how we can handle it with grace, empathy, and intention.
Be Honest with Your Photographer Ahead of Time
Don't feel like you have to sugarcoat it but let me know what to be mindful of. I don't need the full backstory, just enough context to avoid awkward moments or hurt feelings during group photos.
Create a Must Have Photo List, With Boundaries
Your family photo list is a great place to make clear decisions.
Who should be in family portraits?
Are there any combinations we should avoid?
Do we need to do separate photos with certain people?
Having this in writing ensures we move efficiently and avoid any uncomfortable on-the-spot questions.
Assign a Photo Wrangler Who Knows the Family
This person helps gather people for group photos and can quietly redirect any surprise guests who try to jump in.
Having someone who knows the backstory makes all the difference.
Remember: This is Your Wedding!
It's okay to prioritze your emotional well being. If including someone in photos doesn't feel right, you're allowed to say no. Your photographer is here to support your decisions and help stick to your shot list.
Family dynamics don't have to ruin the vibe. With clear communication, a solid plan, and a little compassion we'll make sure your photo experience (and your families) feels safe, smooth, and stress-free.
