1. A location that is meaningful to you as a couple.
Is there a location that you and your fiance like to visit? Did you go somewhere neat on your first date or for your proposal? These are are locations that make your engagement session meaningful.
2. A location that incorporates in something that you both love to do as a couple.
Do you love going to the movies? Watching a particular sports team? Is there a bar/restaurant you frequent? These are locations that you can use during your engagement session and will give it a fun feel!
3. A location that you both think is beautiful and that matches your vision.
Don't be afraid to pick a park or location that is beautiful even if it doesn't have any ties to you both as a couple! Even though it is sometimes nice to tie in a location that is significant to you both, it is not necessary.
Things to keep in mind while choosing your location.
1. Permits
Some locations, such as a state park, require a special permit for photographers. These permits are usually not expensive and are easy to get but they are required and need to be booked in advance. You will want to check to see if your location requires a permit and if it does, you will want to make sure it is acquired.
2. Private Property
If you are looking at a location that is not public property (orchard, amusement park, movie theater, bar, etc) then you will want to contact the owners and make sure that it would be okay for you to have your engagement session there. Most locations will work with you but some will not and some will charge you a fee.
3. Time of Day
This one is extremely important. You will want to keep the time of day and the actual day in mind. For example, if you are wanting to use a movie theater for a portion of your engagement portraits and you inquire about a Friday night they are more than likely going to say no since it is their busy time. If you are wanting to use a location like that then you will want to plan on a time when they will not be busy. Another thing to look for are events. Is there going to be an event at the park you picked? Is downtown going to be closed for a marathon? All of these things are things to consider and keep in mind. Also, you will want to keep the sunrise and sunset times in mind as well.
If you are still stuck on a location then ask your photographer for suggestions. They will more than likely have photographed at different places in your city and may have a location that would be perfect for you both! Just tell them you are lost when it comes to a location and let them know what your vision is for your engagement session and they will be able to provide you with some examples.
